An Emphasis on Community Support

Stitchin’ Post Gifts, a downtown fixture on The Square in Salisbury, NC, since 1975, supports giving back to the community and emphasizes buying and selling U.S.A. products.

Store management looks with favor on vendors who share their values of giving back to charity. The store plans promotions to raise awareness and funds for local non-profits, with a special emphasis on Faithful Friends and the Humane Society of Rowan County. The gift shop is a consistent readers’ choice winner in the Salisbury Post’s annual RoCo Gold competitions.

Pam Hylton Coffield and her mother, Margaret Hylton, started Stitchin’ Post Gifts, after finding themselves out of jobs one morning when they arrived at work. They were working at National Fabrics at the original Towne Mall on East Innes Street (now Towne Creek Commons). “They had shut down the business overnight and did not tell us,” Pam says. “That catapulted us into starting our own business.”

Pam credits her parents with teaching her the importance of a strong financial background. Instead of an allowance, her dad, Wallas Hylton, took young Pam to Home Savings and Loan and opened an account in her name with $25 in it. “He wanted me to see how the money would grow,” she recalls. “Watch the pennies. Watch the money. Be aware of what you are buying. Never spend more than you take in. It was a huge lesson in life.” Stitchin’ Post Gifts, led by Pam and her mother, has thrived since 1975.
